Traversée de Grenoble

GRENOBLE AROUND THE TIME OF THE REVOCATION...
In 1520, when reformist thought began to emerge, Grenoble was a small town with 5,000 inhabitants held within its old Roman fortifications.
Protestantism spread quickly through this frontier town which was surrounded by mountains and the Waldensian valleys.
With the advent of the Religious Wars in 1562, Grenoble found itself to be an epicenter for the conflicts. The town was taken by the famous Baron des Adrets, who, as a Protestant leader, organized large scale iconoclasms.
For 25 years after 1565, the town was held by Catholics and served as a refuge for those exiled from Calvinist regions in the mountains. Grenoble was also a town of temperance, where for example, the Dauphiné's lieutenant general, Monsieur de Gordes, refused to carry out the massacre of Calvinists after St. Barthélémy.
However, in 1585 the town joined the league and remained ultra-Catholic until it was seized by the Huguenot leader, Lesdiguières, in 1590.
Once again, Grenoble's leaders showed restraint and there were no massacres nor witch hunts. The Protestant leader wanted to set an example and demonstrate that both populations could live together in peace. The initiative was successful and the old fortifications were destroyed to make room for an expansion. The city, which tripled in size, began to develop, and constructions blossomed.
After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Grenoble was nearing a population of 20,000 and was home to the lieutenant general's headquarters, the Parliament, the Court of Auditors, and the See. The city was rather tolerant and only 3,000 Protestants left after the revocation. Both Protestant and Catholic churches sat side by side and for years Grenoble had already been a leg in the Protestant emigration towards Geneva, Switzerland, and the German regions.
The revocation changed little in city that was already used to handling a flux of emigrants. Those passing through Grenoble already knew which inns and shopkeepers would be friendly...
The Cardinal le Camus, Bishop of Grenoble, also quickly realized that the use of force was not the best argument for converting the “strayed flock”. He stood by this position and did not call upon the dragoons as other regions did.
Grenoble in the 21st century...
Three centuries later, Grenoble is a city of 200,000 inhabitants and 500,000 in the metropolitan areas. The city also counts a university campus with more than 60,000 students. Geographically, the metropolitan area is enclosed between the Isère and the Drac rivers and surrounded by the Chartreuse, the Vercors and the Belledonne massifs.
The Bastille's buttresses, which overlook the city, offer the best view of Grenoble's evolution.
Lesdiguières's Grenoble with its gray-ochre Roman tiles.
XIXth century Grenoble with its red tiles.
And modern-day Grenoble with its never ending buildings.
The city has not kept many remnants of its past. However, with a bit of searching through the old neighborhoods, you can happen upon a few small treasures from the 17th century.
The Saint-André square with the Dauphiné's parliament and college's palace.
Notre Dame square with its cathedral and the museum : "Musée de l'Evêché".
The St Laurent neighborhood and church wherein is located the gate by which the town was taken in 1590.
The monastery, “couvent de la visitation”, which was founded by Francois de Salles and houses the museum : "le Musée Dauphinois".
The museum : “Musée de peinture”, whose collection is exceptional.
This list covers everything a tourist visiting the capital of the Alps should see while in the city.
