A l’écart des grandes voies de communication du Rhône et de la Durance, cet itinéraire constituait un chemin d’échanges emprunté notamment par les colporteurs et jadis par les barbes vaudois. Cette présence vaudoise est bien marquée dans le nom actuel des bastides autour de Sault : la Cortasse, la Jourdane, les Longs, la Bernarde.
SAULT
Entourée de communautés d’origine vaudoise (St Trinit, St Jean de Durefort, etc.) souvent visitées par les barbes, Sault fut très tôt touchée par la Réforme et les ouvrages protestants y circulaient (condamnation au bannissement, le 3 avril 1544, d’un particulier qui lisait des libelles réformés). La ville fut en proie aux incursions des troupes huguenotes venues de Montbrun et commandées par Charles du Puy-Montbrun. Après l’édit d’Amboise (12 mars 1563) permettant l’exercice du culte dans une ville par baillage, Sault devint ainsi en 1566 une Eglise réformée de plein exercice avec un pasteur, un temple et un cimetière protestant. En 1567, les garnisons catholiques furent expulsées et la ville avait pour premier consul le chef des protestants, le capitaine Etienne Bernus. Mais la ville dut être rendue aux catholiques dès 1568.
Au cours des guerres de religion, la ville fut disputée entre les protestants et les catholiques. Les protestants tentèrent à plusieurs reprises de reprendre la ville, par exemple en 1575 et en 1586 avec Lesdiguières. Mais Sault resta aux mains des catholiques et devint même le fef de la Ligue catholique après 1578, lorsque Chrétienne d’Aguerre eut épousé en secondes noces le comte de Sault, François d’Agoult, général catholique de la province et chef de la Ligue. Après la mort de François d’Agoult en 1586, Chrétienne d’Aguerre devint chef de la Ligue à son tour et galvanisa la résistance de la ville. Après l’édit de Nantes (1598) le culte réformé fut rétabli à Sault et se
maintint jusqu’à la Révocation, avec une forte communauté et de nombreuses familles protestantes dans les villages alentour.

The chapel St Michel d'Anesca Monieux
At the heart of the site Natura 2000 of the Nesque gorges, at the bottom of the canyon a troglodyte chapel of twelfth century offers shelter to hikers. The Saint Michel Chapel is only accessible by foot starting from the lake or village of Monieux.
The country of Sault Sault
The country of Sault streches in front of your eyes on emerging from the Nesque gorges. This is a plain bathed with sunlight in which agriculture and livestock farming have created a patchwork of sceneries. This is the birthplace of lavender.
The village of Sault Sault
Nature serves as a backdrop to this village, established on a rocky promontory in the 11th century to protect against the threat of invasions. This fief became autonomous in the 13th century and expanded into a prosperous county during the 16th century.
The municipal Museum Sault
The museum was founded in 1859 by Henri Chrestian. The items go through the span of the four periods of history of France on the local scale except the mummy brought from Egypt by an inhabitant from Sault. The museum contains also fossils and a mineralogical collection. Open from July 1 to August 31 from Monday to Saturday 3:00 p.m - 6:00 p.m
