MONTMORIN
Tourist information
Valdoule
Sainte-Marie's sundial is located on the façade of the church. Its motto: "He is light and life".
Sainte-Marie Castle Valdoule
The village square and the circular fountain are partly bordered by the remains of a seigniorial residence in the mannerist style, which belonged to the Rivière family. Built on the basis of a quadrangular donjon from the 12th and 13th centuries, the main building is also flanked by a circular tower. A tower once stood at each corner. The round tower features canon loopholes and a Renaissance bay window. The square tower hosts a gypsum fireplace from the 16th century.
The fortified château Valdoule
A fortified manor house built in the 17th century is evidence of the decline in housing in the Early Middle Ages. According to the current owners, this château may have replaced a tower from the 12th century.
The mediaeval tower or "Saracen tower" Valdoule
Fief of Les Mévouillons, vassal lords belonging to the Lyonnais monastery of Ile Barbe, this donjon overlooks a narrow rocky plateau, defended by deep ravines, where the former village grew. Admire the chimney dating from the 12th or 14th century.
Saint-Michel Church Valdoule
This edifice dates from the 17th century but the bell tower is more recent (early 20th century). A marble plaque from the 6th century can be seen here, which is considered to be the oldest Christian inscription in the region. "((Here lies)) (in) peace and of good remembrance, (who lived) fifty years under the administration of John, during the second year of the induction."
The oratory of Font Sante Valdoule
This oratory spring was built in order to revive a local tradition dating from the 16th century. The earth is said to have opened here to offer refuge to a shepherdess being chased by wrongdoers.
Our Lady Chapel Valdoule
It was built on the heights of the hamlet Le Villard at the initiative of the religious community the "Saint John Congregation", which is still present today.
The belfry Valdoule
This edifice was a gift from Blaye de Montmorin, a freethinker, circa 1850. A symbol of secularism, the belfry has two bells, one of which was owned by the clergy. The call to mess was therefore sounded twice: by the church and by the clock.
Saint Arnoux Church Valdoule
Dedicated to Saint Arnold, Bishop of Gap, and built in red sandstone, the oldest part is thought to date from the 12th or more likely the 15th century. Under the authority of Ile Barbe Abbey, it was extended in 1686.
The seigniorial residence from the 17th century Valdoule
This residence was the birthplace of Philis de La Charce in 1645, a heroine converted to Catholicism and sometimes called "the Joan of Arc of Le Dauphiné": she served the State at the time of the invasion of the Alps by the Duke of Savoy in 1692 and was rewarded by King Louis XIV. Inside are ornamental polychrome plasterwork and ogival vaults listed as historical monuments
Col des Tourettes Valdoule
It gives access to Haute Vallée de l’Oule, home to farms, vineyards, lime trees and orchards. Sheep and goat are bred here. Haute Vallée de l’Oule contains wild flora and fauna, with many protected species.
Valdoule
Rising east of the commune of Montmorin, the 32 km-long Oule flows through the valley of the same name as far as La Motte-Chalancon.
The arch of Maraysse Valdoule
Located on the Maraysse crest hike, a small arch is located below the path. This geological formation both entertains and questions, but above all impresses with its singularity.
The Mountain of Maraysse Valdoule
The Mountain of Maraysse, located in the Oule valley, seems inaccessible at first glance. However, a technical path allows one to get there and thus offers a splendid panorama on the valleys of Oule and Rosans. Further, you can admire the mountains of Lure, The Mont Ventoux as well as the Dévoluy massif.
Sainte-Marie Valdoule
Sainte-Marie is very close to the famous village of Pomerol, where Le Col de la Fromagère, which connects it to Rosans, is worth the detour for geological curiosities. Sainte-Marie owes its name to a prior of Bodon Abbey in Saint-May to which the village belonged.
Valdoule
On the top of the hill overlooking the village stands the old keep known as the Tour de Bruis (12th century), accessible via a footpath. The original village of Bruis was once built entirely on this hill.
Valdoule
Montmorin's sundial can be seen on the façade of the town hall. Its motto: "You can forget the past, but you can't avoid the future".
