PONTAIX

This little and picturesque village was, for a long time, a strategic point in the region.

The donjon, which overlooked the village and belonged to the castle, (built around 1200) controlled access to the Drôme valley. The donjon was partially destroyed during the 16th century and only the outer walls of the towers and some connecting courtines remain.
The castle's ancient chapel was a Reformed church in the 16th century, then a Catholic one from the 17th century until the Revolution, and then a Protestant one for the 200 years that followed. It's historical and artistic importance explain the continuous restoration work carried out on it.
What to see : In the Church there are frescos, a large painted funeral band, and an old clock.
Every summer, the association "Temple de Pontaix" organizes exhibitions, conferences, concerts and touristic walking loops. The association also keeps a working relationship with the French Protestant Museums and Remembrance Places and with Diois Huguenot descendants in Germany (in Louisendorf, Frankenau, and Neuret). Telephone number for visits : 04 75 21 20 22

SAINTE-CROIX

The village is located at the foot of the Quint towers and is between the Drôme valley and the Sûre valley. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the Bishops of Die, and the Valentinian Counts fought for control of the Quint castle.

After the 13th century, the castle was controlled by the Valentinian Counts. By the end of the 16th century it's towers were destroyed by royal decree because they had been used during the Religious Wars.

The church is located in the center of the village and is first mentioned in 1104. Around 1805, Napoleon granted control of the nave to the Protestants, while the Catholics kept control of the apse and the transept. This division explains the presence of two steeples.

Sainte-Croix's recent history is a bit particular. In 1863, several secular priests and nuns installed the Diois Mission. Thus, Sainte-Croix, became the center of the Catholic movement to reconquer the Protestant region of Diois.

Starting in 1104, the monastery adjacent to the church was used by canons from from the Order of Saint-Ruf. During the 13th century it was used by monks from Saint-Antoine en Viennois who founded a hospital. They treated patients with plants and a brew made of ergot. The monastery was burned and pillaged in the 16th century by the Huguenots. And then rebuilt between 1648 and 1655.

In 1689, the Bishop of Die installed a diocesan seminar in the monastery. Then in 1778, the commandery joined the Order of Malta.

Since 198, the monastery has become an international center for groups.

PONET-SAINT-AUBAN

Ponet-et-Saint-Auban is located 4km to the north-west of Die. Ever since the merger of two communes, the village is located in the Drôme.

What to see : The castle ruins : Only a small section of wall is left from the building which looked out over the village. The church is located below the castle. It was in fact the lord's chapel and was taken back by the Protestants during the concordat. It dates back to the 12th century and has been under restoration.

You may enjoy discovering frescos from the 18th century, a painted funeral band, a Protestant inscription, a pulpit made of walnut tree wood and the stain-glass windows, skillfully produced by the Argentine master glass artist Santi Chilibroste. Every summer, it holds exhibitions and concerts. Contact information for visits: 06 31 65 10 60.
