CHÂTILLON-EN-DIOIS
L’origine de Châtillon est une implantation de colonisation romaine située en terrain plat, à environ 1 km à l’ouest du village actuel. Par la suite, les invasions des ‘barbares’ de toute sorte et les affrontements entre féodaux obligèrent les châtillonais à quitter leurs résidences de plaine pour s’installer sur un piton facile à défendre. Nous trouvons donc, au début du 13ème siècle, 1200 habitants groupés autour du rocher du château, entassés dans la moitié la plus haute de la vieille ville actuelle, protégée par un rempart. Ils vivent relativement bien de culture et d’élevage et sont unis à leur seigneur par des liens exactement définis par une charte qui règle les droits et devoirs de chacun. La communauté est administrée par des consuls et syndics élus, qui forment un conseil municipal avant la lettre. La charte évolua mais fut reconduite par les seigneurs successifs, jusqu’à la Révolution.
Châtillon fut pillée et détruite par des routiers de passage pendant la guerre de cent ans. D’où la nécessité de reconstruire les remparts, ce qui fut décidé en 1379 sur un nouveau tracé, élargi à la vieille ville actuelle. Et la ville prospéra, contrôlant le commerce avec le Trièves.
En 1561, la Réforme est bien installée dans le Diois et une Eglise est fondée à Chatillon. Au cours des guerres de religion, Châtillon sera l’objet de combats à cause de sa position stratégique et ses murailles seront détruites en 1573.
A la Révocation de l’Edit de Nantes, en 1685, 180 protestants s’exilent mais, deux ans après, on compte encore 177 familles protestantes, soit plus de la moitié des habitants. Et, fait remarquable, la vie continue, entre eux tous, sans opposition majeure; ils sont tous d’abord châtillonais. Et à la Révolution le temple, détruit en 1683, est reconstruit au même emplacement, aux frais de la municipalité par souci d’équité car elle avait de même contribué à construire l’église actuelle en 1688.
La seconde moitié du 19ème siècle vit la création de la route de Die à Chatillon et son prolongement en évitant le village. Il en résulta le développement sur cette voie de toutes les activités commerciales et un certain abandon de la vieille ville, avec pour contrepartie sa préservation.
Vous pourrez donc voir, place du Reviron, la Mairie, le Temple, l’Eglise et la tour d’Horloge, mais surtout flâner dans les ruelles de la vieille ville, très animées en été.

The new temple, the current one, has its entrance on the "countryside" side and is set between two houses. Engraved on the key in relief of the semicircular arch of the entrance door: "L'An Quatre de la liberté 1792".

Châtillon-en-Diois has much to offer to the visitor: Nature is generous with le Glandasse Mountain and the river Bez. Vineyards surround the locality and a botanical trail span across the village. It’s an imposing cirque of limestone cliffs marking the South of the Vercors. One marked path makes the round in 2h30 (starting from the village of Arhiane - follow “Les Carnets d’Archiane” with yellow and green trail marks).
