DIEULEFIT : THE VILLAGE

Located among the mid-level mountains, near the Jabron river, this market town, which lays near clay quarries, has a strong tradition of pottery that dates back to the Gallo-Roman period. The height of their pottery was during the 19th century. The 20th century was a transition period from what was at first mostly a utilitarian production in small workshops, towards creative works by artists. Nowadays, approximately 40 workshops exist in the Dieulefit region and carry on its tradition of pottery.

The restoration of the town allows one to visualize many different time periods. There are several gardens and fortifications left over from the feudal 13th century. Old houses, which date back to the 17th century, and the "Renaissance" house, allow you to imagine the town during the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Several bourgeois houses from the 18th and 19th centuries show the towns evolution afterwards.

Dieulefit was an important area for the Reformed church after the 17th century. At that time, the town has a protestant and a catholic church, the majority of population is Protestant and they live along side Catholics. The ancient church Saint-Pierre was destroyed in 1685 by the Catholics. The Notre Dame de la Calle chapel also illustrates the difficulties of the local history: it was often destroyed (most notably by Protestants in 1551). The former protestant church was destroyed in 1685 by the Catholics (“Place de l’ancien temple” – “Square of the former church”). The current protestant church is situated on the Place Chateauras since 1810.

Despite periods of tension, this protected region seemed predestined to serve as a welcoming ground for those who were fleeing the era's troubles. Starting in 1930, the region became a land of refuge; first for Italians fleeing the crisis, and then fleeing fascism; and then between 1937 and 1939 for Spaniards fleeing civil war. From 1940-1943 many people such as Jews, political activists, and intellectuals, sought refuge in this commune and its peaceful surroundings.

THE CHURCH OF COMPS

Classified Romanic church, mentioned for the first time in the year 1032. By 1600, the catholic priest and the protestant minister both come to worship in the church. In the small hamlet of the Lombards, under the church, we can notice far off, the protestant church of the XIXth century, which today is private property.

THE TWO CASTELS OF POËT CELARD

The castle of the perched village is abandoned in the XVIth century by the family Blain, which moves in the Castle Saint André, better placed and more comfortable (Private property. Thank you for remaining remote). A firm oral tradition says that, Calvin himself was received there in September, 1561. A bust of the reformer and a crystal cup, in which Calvin would have celebrated the Holy Communion, would confirm this passage.

Just before arriving at the castle Saint-André, the path passes in a big beech grove, the “Bois de Vache” former place of worship in the Desert. This place welcomes the annual gathering of the Protestants of the region, each 2th Sunday of August.
