Chindrieux - Motz
SERRIÈRES
- The first path went through Chambéry, Albertville (Ab Publicanos or customs town) and then by the Petit St Bernard pass and Aoste (Augusta Paetonia). This was the main route.
- The second path went further north along the Rhône valley from Yenne (Etanna) to Seyssel, Frangy and then Geneva (Genava), the north of Léman lake, Nyon (colonna equistris) and Vevey (vivisco). Then came Martigny (Octodurum), the Grand St Bernard pass and Aoste in Italy where the two paths merged. This second route is also the ancient Salt Route that connected Vienne and Geneva.
Salt
In isolated regions, salt was all the more important for the salting and conservation of meats and cheeses as well as hide tanning. Numerous tanners, who benefited from a constant exchange of information along these routes, opened shop and used tons of salt to dry their hides. From the 12th century to the 17th century, the glove became an important accessory for powerful figures.

This restored sundial has remained in the same place, in the presbytery garden, since its construction in May 1872. The garden was created by the nobleman De Mareste, the canon and vicar of Motz in the 17th century.
Eglise de Notre Dame de l'Assomption Motz
Built in 1597, this church contains a Baroque interior and the tombs of various noble families. Along three outer walls is a painted 'litre funeraire' ('funeral band') - the only one in the Savoie. The restored band demonstrates the sanctuary's illustrious history.
