SERRIÈRES

The "Sur les pas des Huguenots" trail between Serrières en Chautagne (Savoie) and Chaumont (Haute-Savoie) is practically identical to the "Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle" trail. Although they head in opposite directions, both trails follow the same path. The trail passes through Motz, Seyssel, Designy and Frangy.

After Chaumont, the historical trail followed by exiled Huguenots leaves the Saint-Jacques de Compostelle trail, and instead heads towards the Vuache plateau, Savigny, Valleiry and Chancy on its way to Geneva.

To the south of Serrières, the Huguenot trail comes from Aix-les-Bains along the eastern side of the Bourget Lake, while the Saint-Jacques de Compostelle trail follows the western bank of the lake. The Compostelle trail passes through the charming medieval village of Chanaz next to the Savière Canal, which connects the Bourget Lake and the Rhône River. It then heads towards southern Lyon. Thus the two trails differ in their crossing of the Chautagne region and its vineyards.

The differences in these trails are due to the contents of each project. However, overall the two trails follow the historical route for transport between Geneva and Vienne, be it by river or by land.
During Roman times, two routes existed between Vienne and Italy.  Vienne, capitol of Allobroges, was the starting point for these two trails as Lyon was only recently "born" and not convenient for the provincials.

  • The first path went through Chambéry, Albertville (Ab Publicanos or customs town) and then by the Petit St Bernard pass and Aoste (Augusta Paetonia). This was the main route.
  • The second path went further north along the Rhône valley from Yenne (Etanna) to Seyssel, Frangy and then Geneva (Genava), the north of Léman lake, Nyon (colonna equistris) and Vevey (vivisco). Then came Martigny (Octodurum), the Grand St Bernard pass and Aoste in Italy where the two paths merged. This second route is also the ancient Salt Route that connected Vienne and Geneva.
During Roman times, the Rhône River was also developed as a trade route. The river is navigable until Seyssel and was a real option for transport towards Geneva. Wine, crockery, salt, weapons and tissues traveled down the Rhodanien region.
The river allowed for the development of cities such as Arles, Avignon or Vienne that benefited from being situated at the intersection of the Rhône, and various land and shipping routes. River crossings, in the form of Roman bridges until modern-day bridges, were also key factors in the development of these regions.

Salt

Starting with the Roman Empire, salt production along the Mediterranean was organized and controlled by the state. The salt routes became a widespread network for communication. These various routes encouraged relations between the Empire and conquered countries.
During the Middle Ages, countless salt routes allowed Mediterranean salt to reach the most isolated lands. As salt was a good of great importance for barter, these routes played a strategic role throughout history.

In isolated regions, salt was all the more important for the salting and conservation of meats and cheeses as well as hide tanning. Numerous tanners, who benefited from a constant exchange of information along these routes, opened shop and used tons of salt to dry their hides. From the 12th century to the 17th century, the glove became an important accessory for powerful figures.
