CHAMBÉRY IN THE 16th AND 17th CENTURIES

In the beginning of the 16th century, the Reform was very successful in Geneva. Following the military defeat of the Duke of Savoie by the Bern-Genevans and the French, the reforms were solidly anchored in the south and the west of the Leman Lake. The influence of Calvin and Farel spread to Chambéry.

The first to be burned at the stake in 1539 in Annecy was Louis Curtet, a chatelain in Chaumont, who had converted to the Gospel. In Chambéry, John Lambert, "a peddler of bad sermons" from Geneva, was burned. Forbidden books were found in 1549 in the cell of the Franciscan Caperon.  In 1555, five young folk were burned on the bridge "pont du Reclus" for having brought "mean little French bibles and a letter from Calvin" on their way to the Vaud valleys. Despite these dramatic tales, most of the times, the repression was content to met out banishments and admonitions.

The massacre of 3000 Vaud inhabitants in 1545 along with the populations wide-spread faith in Catholicism, guaranteed a Catholic victory before the counter-Reformation led by the Duke Emmanuel-Philibert even started.

In the 17th century, the Protestants' situation in Savoie-Piedmont was dependent on the French attitude and the economic necessity of maintaining good relations with Geneva. Conversions were performed in both directions and the two populaces lived in relative peace. In 1655, following the examples of repression against the Huguenots in the Dauphiné and Val Pragelas, the Duke Charles-Emmanuel II put in motion a strict repression in the Vaud valleys of the Piedmont.

However, Protestant indignation throughout Europe forced the Duke to soften his attitude. Following Louis XIV's Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the Duke did not show great conviction in pursuing refugees headed through the Savoie to Geneva. Louis XIV forced him to forbid Protestantism throughout his lands in 1686. The resistant of the Vaud valleys was then crushed by franco-savoyards troops. Following this, Savoie's membership in the Augsbourg League against France once again protected the Protestants. This allowed a thousand of them to return to their valleys in 1689 (called the "Glorieuse rentrée" - the Glorious Return).

JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU AND CHAMBÉRY

The Rousseau family originates from the south of Paris. Jean-Jacques's ancestor, Didier Rousseau, left France to flee religious persecution against the Protestants. He settled in Geneva in 1549, where he opened an inn. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva on June 28th, 1712. His father was a master clock maker. His mother passed away after giving birth to him. The orphan child was raised under Calvinist teaching. But, following the influence of Madame de Warens, who raised him, Jean-Jacques abjured his Protestant faith and was baptized at the age of 16. Later on, he returned to his Calvinist roots and followed the path for which he is well-known.

In taking a walk through Chambéry, one can follow the steps of Rousseau and thus discover his past as a musician and music theory professor for young girls from good families. One can also discover the impressive "alleys" of Chambéry.

Madame de Warens married an officer at the age of 14. She left him quickly, and then converted to Catholicism in the hopes of social advancement: hopes that were quickly answered by the King of Sardaigne who gave her a roof and a pension so that she could welcome emigrant Swiss Protestants. Thus in March 1728, she welcomed Jean-Jacques Rousseau for the first time in her house in Annecy. He had just fled Geneva after having returned one night to find the gates of the city closed. With nothing holding him back, he took off.  Jean-Jacques was then housed by a monastery in Turin, before once again being housed by Madame de Warens in Annecy in 1729. He then entered seminary, which he quickly fled to head to Lyon.

During this time, Madame de Warens resettled to Chambéry, where the young man joined her again in the fall of 1731. Their apartment was located in the cour du 13 rue de Boigne. A commemorative plaque marks the location. Madame de Warens rented this dark place from Monsieur de Saint-Laurent, who was the King's treasurer, and thus benefited from his protection.
Rousseau found work in the Land Registry attached to a castle which no longer exists. He quit in June of 1732 to focus on his music. Thanks to Madame de Warens’s connections, his students were young ladies from good families. Thus Rousseau saw the doors to Chambery's high society open for him.

To this day, one can visit the center of the town much like Rousseau did when he went to visit his students. The nearest student, was Mademoiselle de Mellarède, who was located in the Dieulefils Hotel (122-128 Place Saint-Léger). One can reach Place Saint-Léger by a dark alley that leaves the courtyard of 13 rue de Boigne.

From the Place Saint-Léger, several more "alleys" leave the street, passing behind houses where time seems to have been frozen since the 18th century. The alleys are often part of the houses and protected by a roof. The importance of these alleys is explained by three factors. First, it was a necessary choice as Chambéry is built on swamp land, and buildings had to be raised and interconnected. Second, there was a lack of space for construction.  Finally, the "toisage" a local tax, was calculated based on the size of a building's façade.

Mademoiselle de Challes, another of Rousseau's students, lived in the Cordon Hotel (71 rue Saint-Réal). The back of the hotel faces the courtyard of 13 rue de Boigne. Other Rousseau students were: Mademoiselle Costa de Beauregard, who lived at the Costa Hotel which was accessible by 106 rue de la Croix-d'or and 85 place de la Métropole, Mademoiselle Lard, who lived at 10 rue de la Trésorie, and Mademoiselle de Menthon, who lived on rue de la Juiverie.

Rousseau lived for a time in an apartment on rue Saint-Réal. A statue representing him as a "solitary walker" is located on the Lémenc hillock. Between 1736 and 1742, Rousseau and de Warens lived in the Charmettes (above Chambéry) during the summer and fall.

It is at this house in the Charmettes (classified as a historical monument) that the young philosopher supposedly discovered his passion for botany and nature as well as his love for Madam de Warens. This sweet life is the subject of Rousseau’s books V and VI of Confessions as well as the last lines of Reveries of a Solitary Walker. As a self-taught man, it was in the Charmettes that Rousseau began his "stock of ideas" which would serve as the basis for his thoughts.
